ATUALIZADO!

QUEM É A "HOTVIOLINIST"?

[I’m a woman of few words… until you ask me a question, and then you might not be able to get me to shut up. A lot of questions came about after a fan-posted YouTube clip of me, which was titled “The Hot Violinist,” went viral. I was getting emails asking for everything from sheet music to ab workouts. If you came to me at the beginning of my senior year of high school and told me that a few short years later I would be touring the country as a professional fiddler, I would have laughed, but since then, I’ve produced and performed on 8 albums with two different bands, E Muzeki and now Circa Paleo.

The inspiration to play violin came late, at the age of 18, and a couple of reputable violin teachers in my hometown of San Antonio discouraged me from trying to play at all. I’m really glad that I didn’t listen, because I’ve had a lot of crazy fun playing this thing. It was really hard at the beginning. I remember sitting on my bed after screeching away for thirty minutes and thinking, is it really possible that I will ever bow a single clear and pretty note? I wish I had recorded those early practice sessions as proof. Even my sweet grandparents said it sounded terrible! There was also a lot of confusing stuff to wade through when it came to getting outfitted with the right gear and finding teachers. It took a few years worth of trial and error, but then I found myself shyly performing for audiences who actually seemed to appreciate my playing. I’ve seen little kids dance and grown men cry. From the stage, I’ve enjoyed the faces of thousands of audiences, and each combination of people has a different vibe. Some groups sit quietly and some evolve into all-out raucous dance parties.

Slowly I came out of my shell, and I’m not so shy anymore. You know, in a way those early naysayers were right. I’m not gonna be the next Joshua Bell or symphony concert master, but I love this instrument and I’ve realized that the way I play it is completely unique to me. And only YOU can play the violin, cook, or jump around like you. That’s why I wanted to create a site dedicated to answering questions about my journey. I don’t pretend to be a virtuoso or master pedagogue of violin technique. I’m just sharing what I’ve found as I go, and keeping an open ear along the way.

NICOLA BENEDETTI

She said that more than any other entertainment industry, classical musicians had the most integrity because they were almost always selected for their ability ‘Classical music isn’t supposed to be sexy. If classical music is ever sexy it’s in a completely dignified way. There are a lot of women playing now - and also a lot of attractive women.’ Despite her glamorous image, she says she and her boyfriend, German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich, have no interest in being the Brad and Angelina of the classical music world. She says: ‘Glamorous is definitely not a word that I would associate with my life.’

She recently told of the relentless demands she faced as a 16-year-old star, revealing she played 110 concerts in a year. She adds: ‘By the age of 17 or 18 I was going through a very tough time.’ She says: ‘I look back on it and I am slightly disappointed with a couple of experiences where I felt someone could have been more advisory. ‘I think I did feel that some of that support wasn’t necessarily there within the profession. It is extremely cut-throat.’
